Bev Moon artwork in Arts of Asia case at Auckland War Memorial Museum

In 2023, the Auckland War Memorial Museum acquired Offering V, one of eight place settings from the round table installation artwork, also known as Offering, displayed at Bergman Gallery.

Offering V is the inaugural piece showcased in a newly installed case within the Arts of Asia gallery. This gallery, which has a long history at the museum, now has a display case dedicated to highlighting new works by contemporary Asian artists in the Auckland Museum collection.

It’s an honour to be the first contemporary artist to be featured in a space that celebrates the richness and diversity of Asian art and craft over several centuries. I’m grateful (and somewhat daunted!) to be showing alongside the work of accomplished and masterful artists.

Fortune

Fortune ends its nationwide tour in my hometown of Wellington.

Come and see my heartfelt homage to my Taishanese mother Yip Sue Yen and grandmother Lee Choy Kee, both skilled cooks and knitters. Fortune tells their story as two of only 500 Chinese women and children granted temporary refuge in New Zealand during the Sino-Japanese War, reuniting with my grandfather, Yip Tack Lee (Dixon Yip), in a completely foreign land.

Accompanying Fortune are two new artworks, cherished family photos and mementoes, all lent exclusively for the exhibition at Wellington Museum.

Fortune

In the early 1940s, not long after my grandmother Lee Choy Kee and mother Yip Sue Yen arrived in NZ to join my grandfather Yip Tack Lee (Dixon Yip), they moved from Timaru in NZ’s South Island to the Wairarapa before settling in Wellington. So it is my pleasure to bring Fortune to the wonderful Aratoi, Waiarapa Museum of Art and History in 2024.

(Aratoi, Waiarapa Museum of Art and History)进行展出。

Bergman Gallery exhibition poster featuring knitted chicken feet by Bev Moon

In an ongoing series of exhibitions exploring diasporic New Zealand/Asian identity, exhibition curator Benny Chan unites 10 artists from the Auckland and Waikato region for the new exhibition Belonging: Stories of Contemporary New Zealand Asian Artists.

The story for New Zealand/Asian immigration is a complex one, beset by the colonial prejudices of the age. From the outset of the gold rush in the 1860's, Asian immigrants have forged an integral path within modern New Zealand society.

Chan states, 'Belonging tells stories of our people, from the hardships of the Poll Tax descendants through 160 years of building identity within a New Zealand context. Belonging is not an attempt to relitigate historical grievance, Belonging is a celebration of colour, diversity, and love. It is about embracing our combined culture and acknowledging our heritage. It is about community, home, and most importantly, that we belong.'

Fortune

The town of Gore in NZ’s South Island holds a special place in my family’s history. My great-grandfather Ng Fon ran the Jou Lee Laundry from 1911 to 1941. More than 100 years after my grandfather Ng Kew sailed from China to join his father in 1920 to help run the business, I travelled to Gore for the first time to bring Fortune to the charming Eastern Southland Gallery.
